BAMBURI NATURE TRAIL

The Bamburi Nature trails also knownHaller Park Mombasa as is an environmental rehabilitation masterpiece. A water land of stone quarry has been reclaimed and amongst the casuarinas forest a variety of tropical flora and fauna now flourishes. Eland, Buffalo, Crocodiles and birds can be seen. Haller Parkure Trail the cement factory stated its operations in 1954. The factory obtained its raw materials from the quarry, a fossil coral limestone reef that lived 125,000 to 250,000 years ago. In 1971, Dr. Rene Haller started rehabilitation the quarry with the support of Bamburi Portland Cement Company. the southern part of the Quarry that comprised of 75 hectares and northern which was 11 square km.

A wide range of game animals and birds, that are not so easily seen, dwell in the fenced area. Each animal species serve a certain purpose to maintain an ecological equilibrium in this man made attraction. Almost the animals utilize each a different feeding niche. The mammal species seen are hippos, giraffes, buffalos, zebras, waterbucks, elands and Oryx. The bushbuck, suni and duiker are shy and therefore rarely seen as tend to dash away upon hearing any sounds. Bush pig, marsh mongoose and serval cat are most active at night.
