6 Days Rwenzori Mountains Climb - Kilembe Trail

Climb the Moutains if the Moon through the Kilembe Trail offers shorter and longer treks. This route is superbly scenic, reaching the dramatic heather zone by the end of the first day. Rwenzori Mountains National Park is known for its distinctive vegatation.  On the route to the peaks, hikers  experience series of distinct altitudinal vegetation zones; montane forest, bamboo, tree heathers and afro-alpine. The latter, with its emblematic giant forms of Senecio (groundsel) and lobelia, is one of the world’s rarest botanical communities, being limited to East African mountains.

Day 1: Kilembe - Kalalama

Kilembe (1,450m) - Kalalama (3156m) (Altitude gain: +1706m). On the first day you experience a long steady ascent through montane forest and bamboo to a campsite at Kalalama in the heather zone.

Day 2: leave Kalalama - Mutinda Day

Leave Kalalama (3156m) - Mutinda (3810m) (Alt gain: + 654m). The route follows the Kamusoni River to a campsite at the base of the 4200m Mutinda Towers outcrop.

Day 3: Mutinda - Lake Kopello

Mutinda (3810m) - Lake Kopello Overlook (4185m) (Alt gain: +375m). Just above Mutinda, the trail traverses through open moorland to get to a camp at the Lake Kopello viewpoint.

Day 4: Lake Kopello- Mount Baker Base Camp

Lake Kopello (4185m) - Mount Baker Base Camp (4160m) (Alt loss -15m). A day of ups and downs skirts the flank of Mt Luigi da Savoia to reach a campsite beside a tributary of the Butawu valley.

Day 5: Mount Baker Base Camp   to Mount Kopello or Mutinda Camp.

Mount Baker Base Camp (4160m) - Mount Baker (4842m) (Alt gain: +682m). An early start is required to climb to Freshfield Pass and Mount Baker before cloud obscures the views. Descend to Lake Kopello or Mutinda Camp.

Day 6/7: Descent from Kopello (or Mutinda to Kilembe.

Descend from Kopello (a 2350m descent) or Mutinda to Kilembe.

Mountain Trekking
