Nairobi National Park - "The World's only wildlife capital..."

Nairobi National Park is unique in that it is the only protected area in the world with a variety of animals and birds situated in the Kenya's Cosmopolitan capital Nairobi. The park is a principal attraction for visitors to Nairobi popularly known as the green city in the sun.

The park is comprised of diverse habitats with distinctive fauna and flora. Nairobi National Park major vegetation is open savannah grass plains dotted acacia bush. The western side has a highland dry forest and a permanent river with a riverine forest in the south.

In addition, there are large areas with broken bush country and deep rocky valleys and gorges with scrub and long grass.

Man-made dams have also added a further habitat, favorable to certain species of birds and other aquatic species. The dams serve as watering points for the herbivores especially during the dry season.

Nairobi National Park: What Game

  • The park has a rich and diverse birdlife with 400 species recorded though some species are seasonal. The park hosts Northern hemisphere migrants which pass through the park.
  • Large predators such as lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah and aggregations of large herbivores- rhino, eland, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest live here.
  • Nairobi Education Centre Animal Orphanage is a unique facility as a refuge and rehabilitation of animals found abandoned or injured.

     

  • Wildlife found in the orphanage includes lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, serval cats, warthogs, leopards, ostriches, baboons, monkeys and buffaloes. Endemic birdlife are parrots, guinea fowl, and crown crane among others.
