Dar es Salaam, formerly known as Mzizima, was once Tanzania's capital city found along a natural harbor on the Indian Ocean coastline. A fishing village before becoming a port and trading center in the turn of 19th Century.

Like other East African Indian ocean coastal towns Dar es Salaam has a mix of African, Arabic and Indian influences yet keeps close ties to its Swahili roots. Dar es Salaam - Arabic for “Abode of Peace”

The National Museum Dar es Salaam exhibit relics relating to pre-historic evolution the famous fossil discoveries of Zinjanthropus (nutcracker man) from Olduvai Gorge, ethnic history, artefacts and photographs from the colonial era.

Other enchanting items covering other interesting topics are on displays such as the Shirazi civilization of Kilwa Ruins, the Zanzibar slave trade, the German and British colonial periods. The museum is close the Botanical Gardens, provides an exciting escape.

The open-air Village Museum is a collection of authentically constructed homes displaying traditional cultural lifestyles of the various ethnic people of Tanzania.  Ngoma is made up of traditional drumming and dancing performances that highlight the tribal dances.
