The Selous Game Reserve a pristine and massive African wilderness, with grassy plains, open woodland, mountains and forests. The game reserve is Africa's largest game reserve, named after the great explorer and hunter, Frederick Courtney Selous.

The Selous Game Reserve is three times the size of South Africa's Kruger National Park and more than twice the size of Serengeti National Park is an indication of the vast size of this enormous Selous Park which is also one of Tanzania's three World Heritage Sites.

Covering 50,000 square kilometres, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. It also has an exceptionally high variety of habitats including Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps, making it a valuable laboratory for on-going ecological and biological processes.

The park nurtured by rivers and lakes  and hosts remarkable volumes of wild game that including Africa's largest elephant and wild dog populations and probably it's largest buffalo, hippo, crocodile and prides of lion.

Selous Game Reserve: What Game

  • Selous is home to the African elephant, black rhinoceros, wild hunting dog cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus, crocodile, and buffalo
  • Important populations of ungulates including sable antelope, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, greater kudu, eland and Nyassa wildebeest.
  • In addition, there are also a large numbers of Nile crocodile and world's largest known populations of hippopotamus.
  • More than 350 species of birds have been recorded here including the endemic Udzungwa forest partridge and the rufous winged sunbird knob-billed duck, southern ground hornbill and bateleur eagle, Stierling's woodpecker, white-headed lapwing, and the rufous-winged sunbird.
  • The adjacent Mikumi lowlands and mountains and Kilombero wetlands and the nearby Udzungwa Mountains are rich in vulnerable bird species which, like the Kilombero weaver at times stray into the reserve. The globally threatened wattled crane, corncrake and lesser kestrel also occur.
